Join us for the insightful sessions for Secondary English teachers and education professionals, starting with an Author Q&A with Patrice Lawrence, followed by workshops that explore creative approaches to literature, such as creating film trailers, promoting reading for pleasure, and using technology in the classroom. Attendees will also delve into active approaches to Shakespeare, drama-based pedagogy, and the use of moving images to teach creative writing, providing a rich learning experience in innovative educational methods.

Creativity in Secondary English Teaching

Time: 2-5pm

Location: In person at the University of Sussex campus

Programme:

2 – 2.40 pm Welcome and Keynote - Author Q and A - Patrice Lawrence

2.45 – 3.45 pm: choose a one hour workshop below

· Workshop 1a: Creating a film trailer for ‘Macbeth’ Part 1 (you will also need to do workshop 1b part 2) - Dr. Keith Perera, University of Sussex · Workshop 2: Promoting reading for pleasure through creative approaches - Nikki Garrard, English teacher and YA book author

· Workshop 3: Creative Writing: sharing good practice – Lucy Bruen, English teacher and Associate Fellow, University of Sussex

· Workshop 4: Creativity using technology in the classroom – Deborah Bernarde, English teacher and mentor 3.45 - 4.05 pm - tea and cake; time to visit the Open Minds bookstall

4.10 - 5.10 pm: Choose another workshop:

· Workshop 1b: Creating a film trailer for ‘Macbeth’ Part 2 (must be done with Part 1)

· Workshop 5: Active Approaches to Shakespeare – Tom Davey, Shakespearean actor and educator, Bright Torches

· Workshop 6: Drama-based pedagogy to explore ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ (but can be applied to any text!) - Sue Pinnick, Associate Professor in English Education; Education Doctoral researcher, University of Sussex

· Workshop 7: Teen Read group only – final meeting and judging – Lucy Bruen

· Workshop 8: Using moving image to teach creative writing, focus on the film Stand By Me - Anthony Cockerill, Director of NATE
