BSMS - Mind the gap: how to solve Britain's social mobility problem with Rt Hon Alan Milburn – 1st November 2017
Join Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) faculty and guests for a thought-provoking lecture and a sociable evening with our new students at ‘Mind the gap: how to solve Britain's social mobility problem’ with Rt Hon Alan Milburn.
Wednesday 1 November 2017.
6.30-7.30pm Chowen Lecture Theatre, BSMS Teaching Building, University of Sussex.
Alan Milburn is Chair of the Social Mobility Commission, which recently published the hard-hitting report ‘Time for Change’, which shows that two decades of government efforts to improve social mobility have failed to deliver enough progress in reducing the gap between Britain’s ‘haves and have nots’. He was a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party from 1992 to 2010 and Secretary of State for Health from 1999 to 2003.
The public lecture ‘Mind the gap: how to solve Britain's social mobility problem’ will take place in the Chowen Lecture Theatre at the Medical School Teaching Building.
Following the lecture, BSMS faculty, students and their guests are invited to attend a three-course dinner with the Rt Hon Alan Milburn at Bramber House, University of Sussex campus.
The menu for dinner will be a starter of Sussex chicken liver parfait, served with a fig and mustard seed compote, caramelised onion focaccia and smoked onion dust. The main course will be an assiette of lamb rump with olive oil mash, French beans, wild mushrooms and balsamic jus. Dessert will be a honey cheesecake, made with bee pollen, honeycomb and vanilla scented caramel.
There is also a vegetarian menu of heritage beetroot salad followed by a main course of red onion tarte tatin, made with whipped Brighton blue cheese soufflé, burnt onion puree, leeks, walnuts and rocket dressing. Please advise us of any dietary requirements when booking your tickets below.
